Old Woods Artist Gatherings

Hello all artists,

This week we again bring a talented artist Kate Baker.

We asked Kate (39) hometown Portland, OR USA how she got started in art. Kate says back in 2010 I took a painting class for a humanities credit while working on her degree. Up until this point she had no idea she had any artistic talent. Her instructor told me to stop thinking and just create. She hasn't looked back since.

Kate enjoys working in pencil drawings, charcoal, oil pastels, acrylic paint and mixed media. Kate's dream project would be to create a public mural. Kate's favorite piece she has completed would be "The Bullet" piece. It is a mixed media piece done on a 42" projection TV screen. Some artists that have inspired Kate are Jenny Saville and Jean Hodges.

Feature Artist - Brian Kjenslee (Supa-fly)

05 July 2016

Old Woods Artist Gatherings,

This weeks artist we bring you is Brian Kjenslee, also known as Supa-fly(nickname that was created playing soccer as a kid and from a couple of girls throughout school and it stuck.) Brian claims hometown to Gresham, OR & San Diego, CA

In school Brian took art as an elective because of his enjoyment of art, but did not consider his work at time very as he didn't have the passion for creating art. Also during school one of Brian's friends was pursued by Disney for his art work and ended up turning down their offer. Brian now 41 has returned to school and going to college for art.

Brian tells about three years ago a buddy of his bought a house which had a bunch of spray paint in the basement. His friend wanted to paint the basement with spray paint. Brian wanting to also test the waters in graffiti starting painting his basement with spray paint. After the basement art was finished Brian's passion for art took off as he enjoyed the way it turned out in the once the final touches were put on. At this point Brian felt natural with painting. Brian begin to watched You Tube videos on spray painting art and started doing a couple of pieces here and there in his spare time. Slowly he continued to grow and create his passion for art and what it meant for him and he could get he views out there for people to see.

Brian says he has always had a creative niche in him and that also helped in his dads business which he built and installed cabinets and fixtures For Nike and Adidas. Brian says they have bulit at least one display in every niketown in the world, not to mention the tiger woods Nike Golf hummer that travels to events. It's got a hitting mat on top of the hummer that Tiger does tricks and talks, etc. Another project they have also built a spring training VW bug for MLB baseball that travels around, and the Taylor Made golf tour truck and so on. Brian says, "Working with these designs is quite complicated yet fascinating, cause it all looks good on paper but they have no idea of how to build and so that is where we have to be creative to try and make things work if not better then what they expect which we excel in."

Brian is currently working in pencil and shading drawing pieces. Brian says, "I can really show some emotions doing this. I enjoy all facets of art and I have tried several types and continue to do so. I like to create things that will be remembered."

Thank you Brian for sharing your work.

Feature Artist - Jacob Darrell Wolf

26 June 2016

Old Woods Artist Gatherings,

Hello All,

This week our guest artist is Jacob Darrell Wolff.

Jacob was born August 30, 1988 and is from his hometown of Waverly, Nebraska. Jacob's first artistic passion was photography. He was introduced to photography by his grandmother through National Geographic Magazines. Jacob says, "I've always been inspired by the thought of learning and discovering something new.

We asked Jacob what types of art he likes to work in and he replied, "Life is art.  I appreciate photography in all of its mediums (developing 35mm film in my darkroom, Polaroid, digital, iPhone). I enjoy creating designs intended for t-shirts, posters and stickers.  I'm currently writing a book of haikus that will be illustrated by 366 artists and co-author with Kimberly Bookman to a sex game. I interview artists on The Art Life Video Blog and feature those artists in a gallery that I periodically curate, called Fourth Effin' Friday.".

Jacobs dream project would be to start a global people/events/fashion/art magazine. When asked if he had a favorite piece of work that he has completed he responded, "Not really.  I'm always more excited about what I'm working on than what I've completed.  I love collaborating.  Anything that I've created with others always turns out way better than what I could have done by myself." Jacob is inspired by all artists. Ansel Adam has always be his favorite photographer. Ben Gilbert is his favorite Portland artist. SKAM and Grace Passerotti give him an infinite well of inspiration from their never ending work and dedication. Jacob says, "From the moment I started interviewing artists, the art that I create has only gotten better and that is directly influenced by the artists and art that I surround myself with.".

Feature Artist - Sean A. Kehr

Old Woods Artist Gatherings,

Welcome to Summer 2016 and hello sun,

This week we have another awesome artist for you. His name is Sean A. Kehr.

Sean (35) is from his hometown Mt. Shasta, CA. Sean says he became interested in art via his mother who was a painter and she shared that passion with both his sister and him at an early age. With art supplies readily available and he never wanted for an opportunity to be creative. In college Sean fooled around with the idea of creating unintentional art. H wanted to make something that came direct from his subconscious and that could represent a conceptual state. When he had trouble finding a career that fit him later in life, Sean took out his old pad and found that if he got out of his way making abstract art came easily to me.

We asked Sean what types of art he likes to work in, he replied, "I paint, draw, and print abstract images based off meditations on concepts like loss and loneliness." Sean's dream art project if ever given the chance would be to create a sculpture garden of metal trees with frosted glass leaves and blown glass fruits filled with starscapes.

Sean's current favorite is a piece he has completed called "Dancing Shadows", his first large scale print. With this piece Sean says, "Every element came together exactly the way I wanted to create something more than I could have hoped for. It explores the nature of what it means to be hidden in a world obsessed with transparency and in the process what value truth has."

We also asked Sean if there were any artists that have inspired him, he replied with, "Salvador DalĂ probably with his masterful way of manipulating the audience into accepting his reality."

Some of Sean's Work:

Sean's work can be seen at the below links and he can be contacted there as well.  Please be sure to check his stuff out further.
