Feature Artist - JoAnn Nelson

Hello Everyone,

Please let me introduce you to our current feature artist.

Name: JoAnn Nelson

Age: Ancient!!!!

How did you get started in art?

I have always loved the beauty of art. but, never thought of myself as artistic. I picked up my first sheet of copper because I found no relief from a chronic pain syndrome. In desperation I created something beautiful.  In the process I found myself distracted and the pain was lessened.

Hometown:

Born in Scranton PA, Lived in NJ, NY, Buenos Aires, Goteborg-Sweden, NYC, Jamaica, California, Seattle, Spokane and now near Portland, Oregon.

What types of art do you enjoy doing?

The kind that is out of my control...when nature plays a part in the creating.

Do you have a dream project?

A large public works project where the copper can be exposed to the elements.

Do you have a favorite piece of artwork completed?

My first piece.  I am right handed, due to my pain, I could only use my left hand to work on it.  In the process, because of this "handicap"...I learned the beauty of facing my lifelong belief that I was not an artist.

Is there another artist that inspires you?

Auguste Rodin whose work will always inspire.

Do you have any links to your work online?

I have an Etsy.com store under darkhorsejewels

Feature Artist - Brando

Good Day All,

For this weeks feature artist we bring Brando from Portland, Oregon.

Name: Brando

Age: 26

How did you get started in art?:

In high school I started doodling weird little cartoony monsters and playing around with spray paint at our local skate park. I started working with acrylic on spray painted canvases in about November of 2013 and have been completing most of my work since I moved to Portland, OR in July of 2014.

Hometown: Santa Rosa, CA

What types of art do you enjoy doing?:

I really like working with acrylic on old tools and wood, the natural looking wood grain and cool textures of old metal make the acrylic stand out really well. I love working with spray paint as well which I hope to be able to do more of in the future

Do you have a dream project?:

I have a few dream projects, I'd like to get to do some murals and work on some bigger canvases. I really want to get to paint on a big saw mill blade at some point, but you don't just find those at thrift stores like you do old handsaws.

Do you have a favorite piece of artwork completed?:

I'd probably say the recent one I did of a bore skull with smoke and symbols coming out of it's eyes, I don't usually do stuff like that so it was really fun.

Is there another artist that inspires you?:

Probably the kids I grew up looking up to like my friends Aiden Kringen, Mike Funkhouser, and Gary Labonte they are the ones that made me want to keep painting with their natural talent and passion for art. I follow a lot of artist that inspire me like Jeff Soto and Charlie Immer with their bright colors and monsters. as well as a few tattoo artists like Pony Reinhardt who does really cool nature and geometry tats and Dr. Woo who has the most amazing detail and line work.
